About the author: Juan
Comas was born in a Spain
of 1900 which was faced with social and political turmoil that would shape his
work. At seventeen he received his first degree in Arts and Sciences, followed
soon by several pedagogical degrees from prestigious universities in the
country. Because of his academic achievements, The High Counsel of Scientific
Investigation of Spain sent him to Geneva
to continue his research in anthropology.
While at the Institute Rousseau, he published several times. After time off to work for the Republicans
during the civil war in Spain ,
Juan Comas received his Doctoral degree in Anthropological Sciences in
1942. He could, however, not return to Spain
where Franco, leading the Nationalists, had won the civil war and had placed
Comas’ name on the exiled persons list. Juan Comas was a pioneer of that which he
criticized: the now-prevalent school of
pedagogy which holds that a professor must impart and advocate a political
agenda imbedded within his science teaching.
