[EC]ITEM YA79…A HISTORY OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE Ben-Sasson $55

This ambitious history by six Hebrew University scholars seeks to encompass the full range of the Jewish experience in nationhood and exile.  It is a very impressive work, considering the necessary compression: about 5,000 years and a scattering of settings virtually worldwide are covered in just over 1,100 pages.  From the dim origins of the 2nd millennium BCE to the hard politics of modern Israel, this work breaks new ground for a one-volume history, both in its range and in its authority.  The book as a whole is a monument to scholarship and feeling, immersing the reader on every page in the rich texture of the Jewish heritage.  A History of the Jewish People presents a total vision of Jewish experiences and achievements--religious, political, social, and economic--in both the land of Israel and the Diaspora throughout the ages. It has been acclaimed as the most comprehensive and penetrating work yet to have appeared in its field.  Six distinguished scholars at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, have set forth here for the first time the authentic story of the Jewish past that is relevant to the Jewish present.  Special attention is paid to the significant historical sources that have come to light in the past decades, to the findings of archaeological research, and to source materials in Jewish studies such as talmudic literature--sources that have often been ignored by historians. This one-volume history covers five millenia of Jewish experience, from the land of Canaan to the founding of the state of Israel. Over 70 scholarly essays examine key issues in Jewish history, politics, economics, and social life in various periods and locales: Biblical Israel, the First Temple, the Roman period, the destruction of the temple, and the Diaspora. Special attention is paid to Jewish experience in the Middle Ages and the Modern era. While written for an academic audience, the HISTORY OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE has become a standard work and is definitely suitable for home bookshelves.

Illustrated with charts, maps, and pictures.

[,ED,]ITEM JK02… THE CURE FOR ALL DISEASES Hulda Regehr Clark $20

Naturopath Hulda Clark's research into the disease process revealed that parasites or pollution cause illness, and in CURE FOR ALL DISEASES, she offers expansive advice on how the patient can take healing into his or her own hands, or minister to their loved ones in a cost-effective manner. Using an audio oscillator, termed the Synchrometer, built at home following instructions in the book, the reader learns to seek out, find through sound waves, selectively electrocute, and thus destroy the offenders, (except any shielded by the intestinal or abdominal lining). Once the parasites are eliminated, further support is given using specific herbs and nutritional treatment. If pollutants are at fault, their detoxification and avoidance are essential. Explicit directions and a no-nonsense approach to healing offer a clear way forward for the adventurous health consumer.

CATEGORY EM [POSTAGE STAMPS]

[EM]ITEM EM00a...First Day Cover, Oct.25, 1990, NORVAL MORRISSEAU VIRGIN MARY CHRISTMAS POSTAGE STAMP $12

Offered for sale is the First Day Cover issued by Canada Post on October 25, 1990 when the 1990 edition of the annual Christmas postage issue first went on sale.  This cover presents 3 of the 4 stamps in the set, featuring the 39 cent Norval Morrisseau Canada Christmas stamp, Virgin Mary with Christ Child and Saint John the Baptist # 1294.

Canada Post Corporation's annual Christmas set features the works of four native Canadian artists. Each one has depicted the nativity or the origin of human life according to their particular cultural beliefs. Jackson Beardy's "Rebirth" (Cree) is seen on the 34¢ GREET MORE stamp. It is a rendering of the beginnings of life and its cycles of existence. On the 39¢ domestic rate, Norval Morrisseau (Ojibwe) "nativizes" a classic Christian image in his painting "Virgin Mary with Christ Child and St. John the Baptist." The green stone sculpture, "Mother and Child", created by a Cape Dorset Inuit artist (believed to be Lutka Qiatsuk), is featured on the 45¢ U.S. rate design. And the 78¢ international rate stamp uses Bill Reid's serigraph on paper, "Children of the Raven", portraying the first human beings entering the world according to Haida belief.  Montreal graphic designer Clermont Malenfant put distinctive backgrounds of metallic colours, textile, blanket or tapestry patterns from each artist's culture together with the artwork and the appropriate translation of the Christmas wish "Peace on Earth".

[ET]ITEM XA14…MARY CASSATT: PAINTER OF MODERN WOMEN Griselda Pollock $20

This radically new study redefines the American artist Mary Cassat's status in the Parisian avant-garde and in American art, placing her work in the wider context of 19th century feminism and art theory.  Cassatt's art explores a New Woman's perspective on the spaces of modernity:  at the theatre, in the drawing-room and garden, in the studio.  Admired by Degas -- who invited her to show with the Impressionists in 1877 -- Cassatt's work reveals her profound study of Old Masters and keen responses to contemporary French and Spanish painters.  Griselda Pollock puts a new emphasis on Cassatt's interest in Manet and her influence on American collections of French modernism.  She also argues that Cassatt's experimentation with etching and pastel from the late 1880s enabled her to represent children and women without sentimentality but with a deepening awareness of a complex psychological charge.

[ET]ITEM YE87…ART HISTORY AND ITS METHODS ed. by Eric Fernie $18

Critical essays culled from the writings of 27 significant art historians and writers comprise this scholarly collection. Fernie, the director of the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London, promises to provide a "view of the methods which art historians have found appropriate or productive in studying the objects and ideas which constitute their discipline."  The chronologically arranged excerpts begin with Renaissance writer Giorgio Vasari's biographical approach and include Goethe's praise of Gothic style, Jacob Burckhardt's historical observations, Johann Joachim Winckelmann's reflections on the cultural context of art, Giovanni Morelli's study of attribution, Roger Fry's analysis of form, Erwin Panofsky's discussion of humanism, and Griselda Pollock's present-day feminist analysis.  Fernie's introductory overview of approaches to art history, his insightful comments preceding each essay, and a helpful glossary provide a substantial framework for the erudite writings.  Recommended for academic collections.

*[FA]ITEM FA01...THE CLUB OF QUEER TRADES G.K. Chesterton $2

Just one condition has to be met for a candidate to be admitted to the exclusive Club of Queer Trades.  But only someone endowed with the cunning of a criminal mind could hope to meet this condition: to attest to being the creator of a brand new occupation sufficiently lucrative to qualify as a living.  And what kind of mind would be able to identify such eccentrics?  Chesterton’s brilliant wit ingeniously satirizes the detective logic of a Sherlock Holmes in this collection of six stories.  Each story is complete in itself, but they are related, and together they weave another mystery which leads to its own startling climax.  ISBN 0881843202; 1987 paperback; very good condition.

This book was first published in 1905 and is now in the public domain.  You can read it for free on-line at http://www.ccel.org/ccel/chesterton/queertrades/files/queertrades.html
