[AI]ITEM AI01...TIMON OF ATHENS [SHAKESPEARE] ed. by H.J. Oliver $8

[AI]ITEM YB27…TRAGEDY OF ROMEO & JULIET ed.by J.A.Bryant $4

Presents the original text of Shakespeare's play side by side with a modern version, discusses the author and the theater of his time, and provides quizzes and other study activities.  Set during five of the most intensely dramatic days ever portrayed, ROMEO AND JULIET was probably written in 1594 or 1595, and first published in a 1597 edition, as transcribed by actors who had performed it. Other editions appeared later, but even the more authoritative versions, such as that of 1599--probably drawn from Shakespeare's own manuscript copies--lack the detailed stage directions present in the actors' transcription; thus, modern editions incorporate several sources. ROMEO AND JULIET is among the most oft performed of Shakespeare's works, and it has been among the most beloved since its earliest days on the stage. Though the title page of the 1597 edition declares that ROMEO AND JULIET had been performed and enjoyed many times prior to its publication, the first extant direct record of the events of a production refer to a 1662 staging, in which the play was probably adapted or altered--adaption was particularly popular in the 17th century. One London stage ran different conclusions on alternative nights; audiences who went home glum on Friday could be uplifted by the play's ending if they returned on Saturday night. The story of ROMEO AND JULIET was derived by Shakespeare from many sources. The version most contemporary to his own was the 1562 poem "The Tragicall History of Romeus and Iuliet" by Arthur Brooke, which itself was an adaptation of a French piece by Pierre Boaistuau, which Boaistuau had adapted from the Italian. Indeed, aspects of the tragic story have recurred throughout Western literature since at least the third century. Shakespeare greatly intensified the pace by compressing a piece which had unfolded over the course of several months into the space of five days--a period in which much transpires at daybreak, including the famous balcony scene where Romeo declares, "But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?/It is the east, and Juliet is the sun." Romeo is forced to approach Juliet in secret because of the impassioned rivalry between his family, the Montagues--and Juliet's, the Capulets. Despite the intensity of their family's mutual disdain, the young lovers strive to marry. However, fate intervenes to keep them apart, and, when the Montagues and Capulets discover the folly of their ways, it's too late for Romeo and Juliet

1,000 years ago the Anasazi lived in New Mexico in an ingenious large-scale, urban, technological society centred around elaborate ritual, monumental building, unity consciousness and principles of peace.  They then disappeared suddenly about 700 years ago.  On August 16th and 17th, 1987, about 3,000 re-incarnations of these entities were drawn back to the ancient Mystery School in Chaco Canyon to meet with the ancient guardian spirits of the canyon to receive a message of ONE for the present time.  This book documents that event.

[AO,]ITEM AO45…THE PROPHETIC VISION OF MERLIN R.J. Stewart $9

Merlin’s prophecies are embedded within Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 12th century History of the British Kings, which has now been confirmed to be a plagiarism of a far older Welsh document, moving the actual events from Wales and Scotland to England.  Nevertheless, the core of the prophesies has been preserved, providing prevision, in startling and accurate detail, to modern times.  This includes prediction of the Union of Scotland and England, the Industrial Revolution, quartz crystal technology, and oil development in the North Sea.  These predictions were published by Monmouth six centuries after they were made originally, and three centuries before Nostradamus repeated some of them.  The prophesies also embody a memory of the religion of Lemuria, brought to Wales by the Fryslan King At-Ur-Mu (the real King Arthur) after the North Sea Tsunami of 448 a.d. destroyed his own country.  Thus they are an esoteric text and metaphysical manual which links ancient Wales back to Atlantis and forward to modern Pleiadian thought.

Storkey puts the complex landscape of the woman's movement into perspective.  She discusses liberal feminism, Marxist feminism and radical feminism before turning to some Christian responses, focusing on those who deny that feminism has any Christian case and those who, on the contrary, have found in feminism a new awareness of their spirituality.  Finally, a 'third way' is presented, a biblically-rooted Christian feminism which reaches beyond the institutional church to all areas of life.

[AW,AA]ITEM AA42…CIRCLE OF STONES Judith Duerk $9

Long ago before the patriarchal period, in many places on Earth, the Goddess was worshipped. Circle of Stones draws us into a meditative experience of the lost Feminine and creates a space for us to consider our present lives from the eyes of women's ancient culture and ritual. Incorporating the most ancient symbol of spirituality — the circle of stones — Duerk weaves stories, dreams, and visions of women to lead each reader into a personal yet archetypal journey, posing the reflective question, "How might your life have been different if . . . ?" Circle of Stones is about discovering the power of the feminine and the core of our beings. It is rich with the history, myth and images of the collective consciousness of woman to guide us in our journey. Beautifully conveyed, it is art, poetry and metaphor: astonishingly simple, yet undeniably sublime. 1989 softcover, good condition.

[ET,AY]ITEM XA14…MARY CASSATT: PAINTER OF MODERN WOMEN Griselda Pollock $20

This radically new study redefines the American artist Mary Cassat's status in the Parisian avant-garde and in American art, placing her work in the wider context of 19th century feminism and art theory.  Cassatt's art explores a New Woman's perspective on the spaces of modernity:  at the theatre, in the drawing-room and garden, in the studio.  Admired by Degas -- who invited her to show with the Impressionists in 1877 -- Cassatt's work reveals her profound study of Old Masters and keen responses to contemporary French and Spanish painters.  Griselda Pollock puts a new emphasis on Cassatt's interest in Manet and her influence on American collections of French modernism.  She also argues that Cassatt's experimentation with etching and pastel from the late 1880s enabled her to represent children and women without sentimentality but with a deepening awareness of a complex psychological charge.

“Bettelheim has written a charming book about enchantment, a profound book about fairy tales....What is new, and exciting, is the warmth, humane and urgent, with which Bettelheim expounds fairy titles as aids to the child's growth, which he understands as a growth through conflicts, the chief conflict being Oedipal ...The Uses of Enchantment cannot enforce the use of fairy stories without a matrix of family security and social consensus; but at least it shows us how cunningly, how lovingly, the anonymous generations of 'a happier age' prepared their children for the challenges of life and guided them toward sexual, ethical health, once upon a time."
