*[CO]ITEM CO31…KAISERSCHLACHT 1918 Randal Gray THE FINAL GERMAN OFFENSIVE $22

The entry of the USA into World War One in April, 1917 impended disaster for Imperial Germany [the Second Reich].  Massive superiority of America in numbers and material meant that Germany needed to move very quickly before those men and materials could reach the front.  The Kaiserschlacht offensive of 1918 was the high-mobility German response.  It shattered the front lines and came within a hair’s breadth of a German victory.  This book is an account of that campaign, number 11 in the Osprey Campaign Series of books.  More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text.

AND LEGENDS OF CHARLEMAGNE $20

Brimming with romance and adventure, this thrilling treasury brings the epic sagas and legends of the Middle Ages vividly to life.  Its evocative, stirring tales recall a time of enchantment… an age of spell-casting wizards, ill-fated lovers and warrior kings, valiant knights, beautiful damsels and noble quests.  Within its pages you’ll meet such legendary figures as King Arthur, Queen Guenever, Sir Launcelot, Merlin, Richard the Lion-Hearted, and Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest.  You’ll also encounter heros and heroines less well known:  the lovely Isabella, whose only wish was to take up her dead lover’s sword; Ogier the Dane, who lives to this day on the isle of Avalon with the sorceress Morgana; Edward the Black Prince, victor at Crecy and Poitiers; the Irish beauty Branwen, the fairest damsel in the world; and the mighty Charlemagne himself, to name but a few.

Quotes for discussion:

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." Jefferson's Commonplace Book, 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764
