NEBIRU CROSSING: KETTLE VALLEY RAILROAD

KETTLE VALLEY RAILROAD

(a 20-mile trek)

So subtle the slope up of man’s

taming his path through rock,

his pass small and temporary

as himself and his plans,

even Kyle thinks so as we walk

that old great road now airy

of train whistle, only a linger

of creosote smells, the great heave

and gasp of steam silenced,

the tomb tunnels putting a finger

to their lips, giving us no leave

to shout, our breath tensed

between the guard rails for tourists.

Some played to their death here,

their gathered flowers an unbelonging

memorial, Erik says, his fists

full of raspberries, while Kyle, near

every precipice, disdains wronging

his stomach with goodness, preferring

the pizza picnic we brought secretly

to supplement Aunt Ann’s liverwurst

on rye. Erik is undemurring

after ten miles, his sweat wetly

staining, while Kyle will be first

at the twenty mile mark still

dancing, still asking me geometric

and engineering questions; every trestle

a new promise that, yes, he will

build bigger, bolder; so energetic

for man’s grandeur. I must wrestle

for a rest, sharing the last

water with Erik who sees

God’s grandeur through my eyes,

the mounts and river are the cast

of a vast drama for man’s ease

to know what’s wise.
