TO CHRIST OUR LORD
How looks heaven now stung with brilliance,
missing
no
minted gilded golden spoked wheel of fire, moted
of million-fold pointed pierced light
eyelets singing
where Michael by all that starry press is voted
most spiritual, principal, pre-eminent; a
first-song
to
lesser breaking indivisible ray-notes, all save-
ing nor sparing crescendo of tiny flames
heaven-long;
never the blazing praise concluding the galactic octave!
Lucifer is zealous in jealousy, self-smitten by pride;
by
his own heart wounded, his darkness must hide ---
his stars now all the sand of earth.
From my own dark grain let me birth
my
fallen star into a little light of mine;
let
me so shine, o Lord, to reflect thine!

AH09…MUSHROOMS AND FUNGI by Moira
Savonius SOLD
In South
of Tuk #12, Kangaroo Poet Norm wrote an article about the sacred mushroom
in the art of Norval Morrisseau. In
Issue #59, Kangaroo Poet JHM wrote an article about the experience of colour
under hallucination, such hallucination made possible by LSD, peyote, and the
sacred mushroom. In Issue #135, Kangaroo
Poet K’lakokum discussed the magic mushroom in Morrisseau’s Warrior Finds Soma [24x 34n, 1979, catalogue raisonne number muaa]
The amanita
muscaria which is believed to be the sacred or magic mushroom is described
on pages 32 to 34 of this book. It is
used by the shaman to enter The House of
Invention. From the 9th
to 13th century in Europe, it was
widely believed that what Eve ate was not an apple, but the sacred
mushroom. This may have started as a
Catholic device to keep people away from a consciousness-raising substance. The
Aztecs [who used it in their spiritual rituals] called it nanacatyl. This book has 104
colour illustrations depicting the entire world of mushrooms and fungi. 1973

[AH,]ITEM AH60...THE MANITOUS: SPIRITUAL WORLD OF THE
OJIBWAY Basil Johnston $29
Spiritual tales, tribal teachings, and
native legends are evocatively interwoven through the time-honoured oral
tradition of the Ojibway. Manitous are
mysteries and spirits – the essences – that infuse and safeguard plants and
animals, including humans, in all aspects of life. These tales about them are simple in
narration but complex in spirit, rich with incident and detail. Here are tricksters, tree spirits, wise
grandmothers, and seductive maidens.
Here we meet fearsome Windigos, the half-human half Manitou creatures
who represent both of their worlds to the other side. Here we find The Prophecy of changes in the
world to come. Most of these stories
have never previously been written down.

CROSS Thiede & d’Ancona $6
By focusing on the fragment of the Titulus
Crucis, the inscribed headboard from Christ's cross, the authors challenge the
modern view that all supposedly holy relics are fakes by providing evidence
that weaves together history, archaeology, myth, religion, and science, taking
readers on a fascinating tour through the ancient world that might change their
beliefs forever. Thiede and d'Ancona argue that the Santa Croce titulus--a
fragment of the cross headboard that mockingly proclaimed Jesus the King of the
Jews--is the genuine article.

QUOTABLE QUOTES:
0592...English historian,
Fraser-Tyler: “A democracy cannot exist
as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover
that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that
moment on the majority always vote for the candidates promising the most
benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always
collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by a dictatorship. The
average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Great
nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great
courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to
selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from
apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage."
0615...Laws that
forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor
determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted
and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent
homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an
armed man." Jefferson's
"Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment,
by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764
0616... “Government is not
reason; it is not eloquence. It is force. And force, like fire, is
a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”—George Washington
